Advanced Placement (AP):

“What are AP courses?” Advanced Placement courses are college-level courses offered through high school. AP courses are more rigorous than traditional high school course offerings.

“Why take an AP course?” Students who want to learn and achieve at the highest level may choose to take AP courses. College admissions departments recognize the academic rigor of AP courses, and having a successful record of AP classes on a high school transcript may make a college applicant much more competitive than his or her peer.

“Do I receive college credit?” You can receive college credit passing the AP exam in your subject area with a 3 or above (scoring is on a 1-5 scale, with 5 being the best). 3,600 colleges in the US (90% of 4-year institutions) will recognize AP credit. This translates to a significant savings on college tuition, the possibility to more specialized courses, or an early completion of a bachelor’s degree.

“What does it cost to take an AP course?” While there is no fee for the class, the fee for the AP exam is $86.

“What AP courses are offered at THS?” THS currently offers: AP US History (11th-12th grades), AP English Language and Composition (12th grade), and Calculus. Additionally, THS students may choose to take additional AP classes through Idaho Digital Learning Academy. Please visit: http://idahodigitallearning.org/webapps/portal/frameset.jsp to see the current course offerings.

Dual Enrollment:

“What is Dual Enrollment?” The Dual Enrollment or Early College program allows high school students to earn both high school and college credit for the same course.

“Why take a Dual Enrollment course?” Earning college credit prior to the start of college can accelerate the student’s degree completion, as well as help the transition between high school and college academics. Dual Enrollment courses are also often less expensive that traditional college credit. An official college transcript (that includes the grade earned) is created for students participating in dual enrollment courses. Students do not have to earn a designated score on the AP exam to receive college credit for the course. As with AP classes, Dual Enrollment offers students the chance to take challenging college courses and earn college credits while building a stronger college portfolio.

“How much does it cost to take a Dual Enrollment class?” Tuition for Dual Enrollment courses taken through Idaho State University cost $200. Tuition for Dual Enrollment courses taken through the THS Technology department through EITC or CSI is free, except for a $10 transcript fee. Other courses offered through EITC and CSI currently cost $65 per credit.  Cost varies according the class and how many credits it is worth- please check with the teacher for updated information.

“What Dual Enrollment Classes are offered at THS?” Students may sign up for Dual Enrollment courses through ISU for AP US History, English 101, English 110, COMM 101: Principles of Speech, and Calculus. Please see the Teton High School Course Descriptions for the prerequisites for each of these courses. This document can be found on the THS website under Registration.

The Technology Department has articulated with Eastern Idaho Technical College and the College of Southern Idaho to award college credit for the following Level 2 and 3 courses: Introduction to Cabinetry, Advanced Cabinetry, Introduction to Drafting/CADD, Architectural/Mechanical Drafting, Construction Systems I, and Construction Systems II. The Business Department has articulated with EITC to offer college credit to Juniors and Seniors (who meet certain requirements) for Keyboarding, Office Tech I and II, and Accounting.
